We have a great opportunity for someone with a strong background in commercial lending – either as an underwriter or a credit manager, to join the Cumberland Building Society as a Commercial Underwriter.

The role

Reporting to the Commercial Underwriting Manager, the key responsibilities and duties in the role are:

  • Assessing and underwriting new commercial lending applications, further loans and amendments to loan terms or security, in line with the Society lending policy, procedures & controls, to deliver judgemental lending decisions in line with the Society risk appetite and your mandated authority.
  • Communicating proactively, positively and effectively to obtain information required to make appropriate lending decisions, explain the rationale behind those decisions and ensure that effective working relationships with colleagues are developed and maintained.

About You

  • Have considerable experience in commercial lending and highly developed credit & risk awareness skills.
  • Have held a commercial lending mandate with authority to approve outside lending policy.
  • Have specific prior experience / knowledge of all or some of the following sectors – hospitality, care homes, food & drink & healthcare.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills, able to interact effectively both face to face & remotely with internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a confident and pragmatic approach with ability to exercise judgement and discretion where appropriate
  • Ability to balance capacity demands and service achievement without compromising lending standards or quality.

Where you will work

This role will be based out of our Head Office in Carlisle; we operate a hybrid working policy allowing the successful candidate to work flexibly between the office and home as required. The team currently work together in Head Office one day per month.
